About us

Alma Mater's new album, MEU FADO MEU, out now!

Their passion for passionate music brought the members of Alma Mater together.

Alma Mater reawaken the voices of worlds gone by, bringing to life the traditions of Portuguese fado. The music is fiery, gripping, tense, yet surprisingly delicate. With its rare combination of instruments and musical influences, the group creates a fresh yet faithful sound.

The group is led by singer Yuliya Mik, whose old-world sensibility and passion for music from times before her own breathes new life into the haunting and beautifully robust fado melodies.

Since the group's formation, Alma Mater has played at Melbourne's best musical hideaways, including the Melbourne Recital Centre, the Paris Cat Jazz Club, The Butterfly Club, the Wesley Anne and others. The group has attracted radio features and has played at music festivals around the country including the Cygnet Folk Festival (Tas.), The Illawarra Folk Festival (NSW), A Taste of Portugal festival (Melbourne), the Melt: Chocolate festival (Melbourne), and the Darebin Music Feast (Melbourne).

Alma Mater launched their debut album, Fado ao largo (‘fado from offshore’), in May 2015 to a sold-out Melbourne Recital Centre salon.

Alma Mater launched their much-anticipated second album, Meu Fado Meu ('my fado, my fado'),
in June 2018 at the MEMO Music Hall.

Alma Mater will take you back in time, to a world where delicate beauty and unrefined passion walk hand-in-hand down the snaking corridors of an antique city.

Alma Mater are:

- Yuliya Mik (voice)

- Nathan Slater (guitar)

- Enzo Ruberto (double bass)

- Anthony Schulz (piano accordion)
